Citizenship Application

A Canadian citizenship application is a process through which an individual applies for Canadian citizenship. To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, an individual must meet certain requirements, including:

• Residency: To apply for Canadian citizenship, an individual must have been physically present in Canada as a permanent resident for at least 1,095 days in the five years preceding the application.

• Language: An individual must demonstrate adequate knowledge of either English or French.

• Criminality: An individual must not have a criminal record or be facing criminal charges.

• Income tax: An individual must have fulfilled their income tax obligations in Canada.

• Oath of Citizenship: An individual must be willing and able to take the Oath of Citizenship.

To apply for Canadian citizenship, an individual must complete and submit the appropriate application form along with the required supporting documents, such as proof of permanent residence, language test results, and police certificates. The application fee must also be paid at the time of submission.

Once the application is submitted, it will be reviewed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). If the application is complete and the individual meets all of the eligibility requirements, they will be invited to take the Oath of Citizenship and will become a Canadian citizen. If the application is incomplete or the individual does not meet the eligibility requirements, the application will be denied and the reasons will be provided.

PRTD (Permanent Resident Travel Document)

Anyone who wishes to enter Canada must have a legitimate form of identification. Permanent residents of Canada may enter the country using their permanent resident card (PR card). However, a permanent resident may be qualified to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) if they need to enter Canada but do not have a current PR card.

A permanent resident may enter Canada just once with a PRTD, allowing them to stay there until getting a new PR card. The PRTD is frequently required to assist admission into Canada because a permanent resident may only apply for a PR card from within Canada. If a person satisfies the requirements listed below, they may apply for a permanent resident travel document:

• Permanent Residency: The applicant must be a permanent resident of Canada.

• Validity of PR Card: The Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) of the applicant should be expired, lost, stolen or will expire within the next six months.

• Travel Reason: The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have a valid reason for travelling outside Canada, such as work, study, or family obligations.

• Residence in Canada: The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have maintained their residence in Canada and intend to return to Canada as a permanent resident.

• Criminality: The applicant must not have a criminal record or be facing criminal charges.

• Security: The applicant must not be considered a security risk to Canada.

• Financial Support: The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient financial support to cover their trip and their return to Canada.

To apply for a PRTD, an individual must complete and submit the appropriate application form along with the required supporting documents, such as a valid passport and proof of residence in Canada. The application fee must also be paid at the time of submission.

It’s worth mentioning that, not everyone needs a PRTD, as some people are eligible to travel with their expired or expiring Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) and some other people have a valid PR card and don’t need a PRTD. But it is always recommended to check with the IRCC if you are unsure whether you need a PRTD or not.

Voluntary Renouncement of PR

Voluntary Renunciation of Permanent Residency (PR) is the process through which a permanent resident of Canada voluntarily gives up their PR status and relinquishes their right to live and work in Canada. This is a serious decision that should not be taken lightly, as it is a permanent and irrevocable action.

Reasons that people may choose to renounce their PR status include:

• The person no longer wishes to live in Canada or has decided to live in another country permanently.
• The person may be facing a removal order or facing criminal charges.
• The person may not be able to meet the residency requirements for PR status.

To renounce PR status, the person must submit a written request for voluntary renunciation to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and pay the appropriate fee. They must also surrender their Permanent Resident Card (PR Card). The person must also be outside Canada when the request is made and when the decision is made, and must not be inadmissible to Canada on grounds of security, human or international rights violations, serious criminality or organized criminality.

It’s worth mentioning that, renouncing PR status can have serious consequences, including loss of healthcare coverage and other benefits and the person will not be able to return to Canada as a permanent resident. Therefore, it is recommended to seek legal advice before making this decision.
